Birmingham City captain Carr announces retirement

Stephen Carr has retired from professional football, citing persistent knee problems as the main reason for his decision.

The former Republic of Ireland international who lists Tottenham and Newcastle among his ex-clubs made his professional debut for Spurs back in 1993 before going on to amass more than 400 senior appearances and 44 international caps.

Carr, 36, originally announced his retirement in 2008 when he was released by Newcastle, but went on to captain Birmingham, winning the Carling Cup before suffering relegation from the Premier League in the 2010-11 season.

He told Birmingham s official website that his knee was getting to the stage where he could no longer continue playing.

I am going on 37 and now is the time to bow out, he said.

Bitesize Prediction: Racing Santander vs Huesca – 28/08/23

Market: Racing Santander win

Odds: 11/10 @

Looking to make an immediate return to winning ways on Monday night, Racing Santander will welcome Huesca to Cantabria.

Starting with the hosts, eventually forced to settle for what would have been a disappointing bottom-half finish last season, Jose Alberto’s side are desperate to mount a genuine play-off charge this time around. Although the Cantabria-based outfit might have been last seen slumping to a routine 2-0 defeat ta the hands of Espanyol, there is no doubt that Los Montaneses will be smelling the chance to claim an immediate boost here. Gaining plenty of praise since opening up the 2023/24 campaign and with their eye-catching start underlined by a 4-0 romp against Eibar earlier in the month, Racing will als…

Milan players allowed one night of celebration, says Mihajlovic

Sinisa Mihajlovic will only allow his AC Milan players one night of celebration after their thumping 3-0 victory over Inter on Sunday.

Goals from Alex, Carlos Bacca and M Baye Niang helped Mihajlovic s team demolish their fierce rivals at San Siro, securing Milan s biggest derby victory since 2011 in the process.

A top-three finish is not out of reach for Milan now, despite their early-season struggles and the speculation surrounding Mihajlovic s own future with the Rossoneri, and therefore the coach does not want his squad losing track of the matter at hand – namely maintaining their impressive recent form.

Finally we gave joy to president [Silvio] Berlusconi. I m happy for him, for the fans, the club and the guys,  he said.

Now we celebrate un…

De Bruyne: Low pricetag cost me at Chelsea

Manchester City star Kevin De Bruyne feels he would have had a better chance of succeeding at Chelsea had the Stamford Bridge side paid big money for him.

The Belgium international joined Chelsea from Genk in January 2012 for a transfer fee in the region of £7 million, but eventually left the club on a permanent basis for Wolfsburg in 2014 after failing to secure regular first-team action.

He quickly became a key figure at the Bundesliga outfit and earned himself a big-money move to City at the start of this season, where he has wasted no time making a name for himself.

De Bruyne feels his £55m pricetag has been beneficial to him rather than a hindrance and thinks things could have panned out differently at Chelsea had he arrived on the back of mega-money tran…

Kolo: I´ll take Yaya out

Kolo Toure will not let brotherly love get the better of him when Liverpool take on Yaya Toure s Manchester City in the League Cup final on Sunday.

Kolo said he would do whatever he had to do to stop Yaya from scoring should he have a chance in the match.

[I would] take him out, big time, Kolo told BBC.

Because I want to win, that s it.

I think he knows me. He knows that if he s going to score a goal, anything I can do to stop him, I will and he knows that.

The Toure brothers have enjoyed plenty of success over the years, and even played together at Manchester City, where they won a Premier League title 2011-12 and an FA Cup the year prior.

Kolo has won four league titles over his career, as well as three major cups, while Yaya has won…

Mitrovic joined Fulham in January on a loan deal and played a huge role in their promotion via the playoffs, scoring 12 times in only 18 starts.

Dembele versatility excites Barcelona boss Valverde

Ernesto Valverde is excited by the versatility new Barcelona arrival Ousmane Dembele will offer his attack.

Barca reached an agreement to sign Dembele from Borussia Dortmund for an initial fee of €105million on Friday, with the France international set to sign a five-year contract.

Valverde cannot wait to work with the 20-year-old, who he feels provides him with multiple tactical options.

He is a player who guarantees offensive depth, the depth that we have lost and that we need, Valverde said ahead of Saturday s LaLiga trip to Alaves.

He is a player who can play on both sides of attack, also in the middle, so that gives us a lot of possibilities.

He is quick, skilful and we hope he will be able to bring a lot to the team. We are very excit…

Nagelsmann for €30million? Bayern reportedly make Leipzig approach

Bayern Munich have reportedly made a first move for RB Leipzig head coach Julian Nagelsmann, but prising him away could prove an expensive operation.

Bundesliga leaders Bayern, who stand on the brink of a ninth successive title, are set to lose head coach Hansi Flick at the end of the season after he asked to be released from his contract.

While Flick is seen as a possible successor to Joachim Low with the Germany national team, the 33-year-old Nagelsmann is considered one of Europe s best young coaches.

His name has been linked with the likes of Real Madrid, Manchester United, Tottenham and many others at various times, but Bayern have also kept a close eye.

Bayern are said to be chasing a fee for the release of Flick to the German Football Federation (D…

Worrall completes Rangers switch

Rangers have completed the season-long loan signing of Joe Worrall from Nottingham Forest, according to Sky Sports.

The defender will join the Scottish Premiership outfit for the remainder of the 2018/19 campaign, having not featured in any of Forest’s seven matches this season.

Since breaking into the Championship outfit’s first team, Worrall has racked up fifty-six appearances in all competitions, with his one and only goal for the club coming in a 3-2 win over Bolton Wanderers last December.

He also had a loan spell with Dagenham and Redbridge during the 2015/16 campaign where he played fifteen times, scoring once.

Internationally, he has been capped three times for England’s U21s while he was part of the U20 squad that won the Toulon Tourna…
