In what could prove to be an enjoyable Bundesliga battle on Sunday afternoon, Heidenheim will welcome Augsburg to the Voith-Arena.
Starting with the hosts, springing what was an almighty Bundesliga upset last season, Heidenheim certainly underlined their status as one of Europe’s ultimate surprise packages. Continuing to receive a string of plaudits from across the continent, Frank Schmidt’s men find the mood in their camp at a red-hot high. Booking an iconic Europa Conference League group stage ticket earlier in the week as they clinched a 5-3 aggregate victory against Swedish outfit Hacken, the Reds will be looking to make another statement here. Opening up the 2024/25 campaign with a routine 2-0 win away at St. Pauli last weekend, Heidenheim have only continued from where they left off back in May. Heading into the summer break with a stunning 4-1 romp against Koln, Schmidt’s side have also lost just one of their previous five Bundesliga appearances at the Voith-Arena continuing on from last season. However, it should be highlighted, all of their last seven consecutive top-flight showdowns in front of their own supporters finish with both teams finding the net.
As for the visitors, eventually falling short last season in the race to clinch a top-half finish among Germany’s elite, Augsburg are desperate to go one-step further this time around. However, forced to settle for an action-packed 2-2 stalemate against Werder Bremen last weekend, Jess Thorup’s side have shown some extended issues on either side of the summer break. Signing off the 2023/24 campaign with a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen, Sunday’s guests have collected just a single point from any of their previous six top-flight appearances. With that extended rut stemming all the way back to April 12th, Augsburg have gained an unwanted reputation for their defensive issues. In fact, Thorup’s side have failed to record a single Bundesliga clean sheet since returning from March’s international break. However, with all of Augsburg’s last five away fixtures finishing with both teams finding the net, we are expecting a similar outcome here.
